Brotherly Love

Most of us manage to put off joining the ranks of the worker bee until we’ve at least graduated high school. Not so Marie, who decided to give herself a head start on the race to the top by landing her first showbiz gig at the age of just 4 years old. Born the eighth child (and only daughter) of Olive May Davis and George Virl Osmond, Marie grew up surrounded by brothers- brothers who’d been performing in some guise or another since 1958. Although Marie was never officially a part of The Osmonds, she couldn’t help but soak up a little of their stardust- something that became more than evident when she made her first (and pretty much only) appearance with the group at the age of four on The Andy Williams Show. From that point, her rise to the top (and to making that $20 million) was underway.

A Little Bit Country

Other than her two oldest brothers (both of whom are deaf), Marie was the only member of the Osmond children not to be included in the group during their peak years of the early 1970s. No doubt reluctant to let her daughter miss out, Marie’s mother convinced Marie to sign onto the family’s record label, MGM/ Kolob Records, and begin forging her own music career. Rather than stick to the contemporary pop sound that had won her brothers their fame and fortune, Marie decided to plow forward with a style that was a “little bit country” (a term she’d revisit in the years to come on the Donny and Marie Show).

Marie’s first single, Paper Roses, was released in 1973 to international (not to say crossover) success. Thanks to her contemporary country style, she managed to hit the number 1 spot on both the country charts and the Top 5 on the Billboard magazine pop chart. Her follow up album achieved similar success, bringing in even more fans, and, of course, even more money. Marie continued to release records throughout the ’70s and ’80s, but by then, music was starting to take a back seat to her other money-making endeavors….

Donny and Marie

Why have one Osmond when you can have two? By the mid-1970s, Donny Osmond’s solo career had bought him teen idol status – something he and Marie happily capitalized on when they launched the weekly variety show, Donny & Marie, in 1975. Nearly 20 years after the original show ended in 1979, the siblings reunited on a three season-long talk show of the same name. By that time, Marie’s reputation in the industry had grown significantly, with a list of credits (including the television movie I Married Wyatt Earp, the documentary series Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, the made-for-TV movie Side by Side: The True Story of the Osmond Family, the ABC sitcom Maybe This Time, and the animation Buster & Chauncey’s Silent Night) a mile long to her name. Season 3 may have spelled the end for Danny & Marie, but it wasn’t the last we’d see of Marie on our screens. Since the show ended, she’s been a regular fixture in our living rooms thanks to her appearances on Celebrity Duets, a celeb-reality show competition produced by Simon Cowell, Marie, her Hallmark Chanel variety show that debuted in 2012 to a network record-breaking 320,000 viewers, and The Talk, on which she’s been appearing as a regular panel member opposite Eve, Sheryl Underwood, Sharon Osbourne, and Carrie Ann Inaba since September 2019.

Broadway Success

You don’t make $20 million by having just one string to your bow. Fortunately, Marie has an arsenal of them. Since the mid-1990s, she combined a successful TV career with Broadway success, creating a storm in the 1994-95 production of The King and I before continuing her success in Donny & Marie – A Broadway Christmas: a show that debuted to such acclaim in 2010 that it was turned into a touring production, and still runs in cities across the US every Christmas.

Away from Broadway, Marie has enjoyed stage success in the Las Vegas show, Donny & Marie at Flamingo Hotel. The show ran continually for 11 years, with the last performance taking place in November 2019. Considering the length of the engagement, and the amount of money a Las Vegas residency can pull in, it’s fair to say a good part of that $20 million has Vegas to thank for its existence.

Marie Osmond: Author

Although her writing success sometimes takes a backseat to her other credits, Marie has actually penned three very well-received books. The first (Behind the Smile: My Journey Out) chronicles her struggle with post-partum depression after the birth of her children (which, as the Osmond family tradition dictates, are many: Marie has married three times (although admittedly, two of those marriages were to the same man) and managed 8 children between them). Her second, Might As Well Laugh About It Now, documents the milestones in her career, and the third, The Key Is Love, centers on her mother’s values.

Endorsements = Money-Spinner

Marie has never been one to shy away from a good endorsement deal or two. Since her first partnership with Kmart in 1977, Marie has endorsed everything from Hawaiian Punch to Pepsi, from Nutrisystem weight loss meals to emergency food storage solutions for Wise Foods. Since 2018, she’s also worked as the strategic advisor and owner of the skincare brand MD Complete.

Summing Up

If you started this article wondering where Marie’s millions came from, you should by now have a good idea. Never one to leave a stone unturned, Marie has explored every money-making aspect of showbiz out there. As an author, performer, and all-round hard worker, she’s spent the last 50 years building her brand and adding new facets to her celebrity status – and the results speak for themselves in that $20 million fortune.
