UFC Flyweight Andrea Lee couldn’t get the job done and now has to face miscellaneous troubles as well, particularly it’s her boyfriend Tony Kelley to blame so far, who was in her corner last night at UFC Vegas 54. Lee lost a unanimous decision to Viviane Araujo and thus Lee’s winning streak just suffered a setback. Lee was coming off a 2- fight winning streak before losing. Her wins regardless are pretty significant over the likes of Antonina Shevchenko, Cynthia Calvillo and many more.
Lee has been in a relationship with Kelley since January 2021 under public knowledge and way before that otherwise. Lee started her new relationship journey after getting rid of her ex-husband Donny Aron who was arrested on domestic violence charges in Lee back in 2018. Since then the couple has been hitched together strongly and are there to support each other wherever possible, such as in fights.
Tony Kelley blames cancel culture for suffering massive lash on the internet on controversial corner work
During Lee’s last fight at UFC Vegas 54 against Viviane Araujo, when the opponents were sent back to the corner in between the rounds for a 30-second break, Lee’s boyfriend-cum-cornerman Tony Kelley was heard saying “That’s what they’re gonna do. They’re dirty f******* Brazilians. They’re going to f***ing cheat like that.”
To this, Kelley suffered an enormous amount of backlash for being racist towards the Brazilians. Gilbert Burns, Cris Cyborg and many more showed their displeasure with what they just heard. Kelley’s upcoming opponent Adrian Yanez has also seen the incident as “not a good look” and assumes that a knockout finish over Kelley will be more satisfying now.
Kelley responded to the backlash on Twitter with this: “Cancel Culture is real. What I said was real and in the heat of battle, and in no way had any type of racist connotations meant…but if that’s the way you take it, idgaf. So many people quick to say racist..that shits getting so old. My reference was to a dirty eye poke.”
What did you make of Kelley’s comments during Lee’s fight night on Brazilians? Do you think he should be given a pass for it was said in the heat of the moment or is it a man’s moral responsibility to take the accountability even when done in anguish? What do you make of Kelley’s backlash as well? Who do you think wins the fight between Kelley and his upcoming opponent Adrian Yanez?
